How to set a default email app on Mac OS and Windows or have Gmail to handle all mail links

Once you set a default email client, any email link (mailto:) you click on will automatically open in the designated application.

As of July 2019, Google Gmail is the Lane Community College email platform.

Setting Your Default Email Application on Windows

Whether you're using Windows 7, 8, or 10, you can easily set your preferred email application as the default. If you already have an email application installed, follow the steps below for your specific version of Windows.

Windows 7

  1. Click on the Start button, then go to Default Programs.
  2. Click on Set your default programs.
  3. In the list on the left, select your preferred email application (e.g., Outlook).
  4. Click on Set this program as default, then click OK.

Windows 8

  1. Open the Control Panel, then go to Default Programs.
  2. Click on Associate a file type or protocol with a program.
  3. In the list that appears, double-click on MAILTO.
  4. Choose your preferred email client from the options provided.

Windows 10

  1. Open the Control Panel, then select Programs.
  2. Click on Default Programs.
  3. Click on Associate a file type or protocol with a program.
  4. Under the Email section on the right, click the currently listed email client.
  5. In the pop-up window, select your preferred email client.
 

Setting Up Email on Mac OS Using the Apple Mail App

The built-in Apple Mail app is the recommended email client for Mac users. Follow these steps to set up your LCC email account.

Step 1: Open the Mail App

  1. Open the Mail app on your Mac.

Step 2: Add Your Email Account

If you are already signed into an email account:

  1. Click on Mail in the top menu bar, then select Add Account….

If you are not signed into any email account:

  • Skip the step above and proceed directly to selecting a mail account provider.

Step 3: Choose Your Mail Account Provider

  1. Under Choose a Mail account provider…, select Google.
  2. A web browser will open, prompting you to log in to your Google account. Enter your LCC credentials.

Step 4: Select Apps to Use with Your Account

After logging in, you'll be asked which apps you want to use with this account.

Ensure Mail is selected.

  • You can also select additional apps like Calendar, Contacts, and Notes if you want them to sync with your LCC account. Keep in mind that enabling these will sync those services with your LCC account as well.

Step 5: Finish Setup

  1. Once you've made your selections, click Done to complete the setup.
  2. Your LCC email account is now ready to use in the Mail app.

Setting a Default Email Client on Android

Once you set a default email client on your Android device, any email link (mailto:) you click on will automatically open in your designated application. Here's how to set it up:

Step 1: Install Your Preferred Email App

  1. Ensure your preferred email app (e.g., Gmail, Outlook) is installed on your Android device. You can download it from the Google Play Store if it's not already installed.

Step 2: Open Your Device Settings

  1. Open the Settings app on your Android device.

Step 3: Set the Default Email App

  1. Scroll down and tap on Apps or Apps & notifications (this may vary depending on your device).
  2. Tap on Default apps or Advanced > Default apps.
  3. Tap on Email.
  4. Select your preferred email app from the list.

Step 4: Test the Configuration

  1. Open a web page or app with an email link (mailto:).
  2. Tap on the email link. It should now automatically open in your designated email app.

Setting a Default Email Client on iOS

On iOS devices, you can set your preferred email app as the default so that any email link (mailto:) you click on will automatically open in that application. Here's how to do it:

Step 1: Install Your Preferred Email App

  1. Ensure that your preferred email app (e.g., Mail, Gmail, Outlook) is installed on your iPhone or iPad. You can download it from the App Store if it's not already installed.

Step 2: Open Your Device Settings

  1. Open the Settings app on your iOS device.

Step 3: Set the Default Email App

  1. Scroll down to find the email app you want to set as the default (e.g., Gmail, Outlook, etc.) and tap on it.
  2. Tap on Default Mail App.
  3. Select your preferred email app from the list.

Step 4: Test the Configuration

  1. Open a web page, message, or app with an email link (mailto:).
  2. Tap on the email link. It should now automatically open in your designated email app.
 

Email Handling in the Internet Browser

If you do not have a valid email client installed on your device, you can allow Gmail to handle all email links in your Internet Browser. This means that each time you click on an email link (mailto:) Gmail will open. This feature is available on Chrome and Firefox. Mac users should refer to the instructions above.

Google Chrome

  1. Open Google Chrome
    1. Make sure you are logged into your LCC Gmail/Google account *
  2. Open the Chrome menu
  3. Click Settings
  4. Click Privacy and Security in the left navigation menu
  5. Select Site Settings and click Additional Permissions at the bottom of the Permissions section.
  6. Click on Protocol Handlers
  7. Make sure that Allow sites to ask to become default handlers for protocols is enabled
    1. Make sure that mail.google.com is not blocked; if it is, click the X to the right of Gmail or mail.google.com to unblock it
  8. Open Gmail in a new tab or window.
  9. Click on the handler icon at the far right side in your address bar at the top of the webpage An image of the handler icon
  10. Under Allow mail.google.com to open all email links? select Allow and click Done

Firefox

  1. Open Firefox
    1. Make sure you are logged into your LCC Gmail/Google account *
  2. Open the Firefox menu An image of a hamburger menu
  3. Click Options
  4. Scroll down to the Applications section
  5. Next to mailto, select Use Gmail

* If you are logged into multiple accounts at the same time, this method will automatically open whichever Gmail account is set as your default. The default account is usually the account you signed into first. You can reset the default by logging out of all accounts and signing into the LCC account first.
