Why do this?

Captioned media files are easier for everyone to understand. They give a written account of all that is said and can help poorly produced documents become useful. Additionally, captioned media:

• is required for accessibility for the deaf and hard-of-hearing
• is for anyone in noisy situations, when the audio quality is poor, or where noise isn't allowed.
• can make your video text searchable by search engines
• increases comprehension, especially for people with English as a second language

One additional reason to consider is that we are required by section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 to make electronic and information technology resources accessible to all. Captioning media makes video more accessible to all st.

Who needs to do this?

Anyone creating audio or video resources at the college.

How do I Make This Happen?

• Give a copy of your media to the ATC(this should be a video file that you have created).
  • These media files should be your own, or licensed by your department.
• The ATC will ask that you fill out a form to inquire about the ownership of the media file, whether you want it accessible to the public via video.lanecc.edu, or just in one particular location.
• Your media file (audio or video) will be uploaded to the college streaming server and will only be accessible to those that you give the URL to unless you give permission to make it public.
• If absolutely needed, we can password protect your videos but we recommend only doing this if you are exercising fair use e.g. showing videos within an online classroom, a portion of the video, limited time duration for access, etc.

Next Steps

• Once the video is uploaded, the ATC will email the submitter a link to the video and an embed code that will work in Moodle or on the Lane Web Site.
• The ATC will also offer any assistance with posting the video or embed code where they need it to be visible.
• Captions will take 2-3 days to be completed. Once they are finished, the ATC will email you a link to the video and an embed code if you want to put the video player in Moodle or Drupal (the Lane website).
• The ATC can assist with embedding videos in your course if you prefer.
