How to use Amara Subtitle Editor

Amara is a free service that allows you to correct captions on streaming services ex. YouTube, Vimeo, etc. Amara Public allows anyone with an Amara account to access, edit, and translate any video created with an Amara Public Workspace account. 

Create a free Amara account

  1. Navigate to https://amara.org/ and create your Amara account using the “sign up for free” or “start subtitling for free” buttons.Amara web page with red highlights on sign up buttons

Add a video

  1. Choose the “add videos” button.Amara web page with add videos button highlighted in red

  3. You will see a message saying your video has been successfully added.video uploaded successfully confirmation highlighted

Download subtitles

  1. Go to https://downsub.com/ on a web browser.

  2. Copy the URL from the video you would like to download the subtitles for and paste it into the text field, then choose the “download” button. This will download a .srt file to your computer.downsub url text field

Add subtitles to Amara video and launch editor

  1. Head to the video on Amara you would like to add captions to and use the three dots next to “Add/Edit subtitles” and choose “Upload subtitles”amara web page with upload subtitles button highlighted

  2. Select the language and browse for the .srt file to upload.amara page with language and subtitles fields highlighted

  3. After the file is uploaded, select “English” under “completed subtitles”, then “Edit Subtitles”.amara page with english link highlighted in redamara page with edit subtitles button highlightedThis will launch the subtitle editor where you can correct any incorrect subtitles.
