What is a Student Information Release?

Releasing or limiting who can access your education records

A federal privacy law, called the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) of 1974, prevents colleges from releasing information about accounts, financial aid, or student grade and scheduling records to anyone but the student.

The college has identified certain pieces of personal information that can be released to a third party without a student's expressed permission. You can read more about Lane's policies on the release of student records here.

If you wish to restrict* or release your directory information, here is a step-by-step page on how to do it

1) Login to ExpressLane, Click on the "myEnrollment" tab:

2) Select "Student Information Release"


3) If you decide to disallow your directory information to be released, click on "restrict directory information:"

The default is to allow your directory information to be available. To see what type of general information can be released, select the Click Here For a Listing of Directory Information option. No sensitive student data will ever be released.

If you decide to restrict your directory information, your name will show up as "Name Withheld" in your online Moodle courses.

If you do decide to restrict your directory information, you can create a password that you can give out to trusted people and business to access your general information: 

4) Set up a Student Information Release Password: 

  • Just type in the password of your choosing and click submit password. You can change your password at any time.

The student help desk is located on main campus in the Library (center building).


It will take up to 15 minutes to update.

*Please note: If you choose to restrict your information, it will not released to anyone, including you, without a password of your choosing. Before receiving certain services, you may be required to verify your identity with a photo ID. Depending on the structure of your class assignments in Moodle, you may need to inform your instructor that you are now designated "Name Withheld-xxxx" in Lane's directory, and/or submit your assignments with your "Name Withheld-xxxx" designation.
